Community agroforestry in Rio sustains birds

When I arrived in Kokota, I had no idea what to expect from the birds.

Of course, the installation of 110,000 square feet is over fifty years old.

I remember everything, from skate parks and playgrounds to paths and concrete benches.

Little forest and nothing but trees in what seemed to be an urban park were found in Cacau, on Guenador Island, 39 kilometers northeast of Rio de Janeiro.

Most of it is occupied by the Brazilian Air Force and Tom Jobim International Airport (also known as Galeão), with half the space designed for over 200 people.

I was one of them a few years ago, and there was a problem.

Agroforestry was not expected.

Trees, trees, trees grow in the same order, and thus, man benefits eternally.

A restaurant specializing in fruits, vegetables, and meats is in the city center.

My guests are greeted by local architect Victor Hugo, under whose shade there is a small grove with a zambolo (Syzygium cumini).

Lucas Marcus, a geography student at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), raised his hand in front of him.

After all, both have lived on Girnador Island for many years, and the common people at this crossroads do not tolerate small amounts of agroforestry.

But this is the true idea of this project.

In the midst of the second largest concrete jungle in Brazil, in very poor land, without governmental or commercial support.

After all, Kokota Agroforestry was born from the love of some islanders over seven years.

The city encouraged this unusual idea by promoting Agrofest and other agricultural explorations on the island, but the roots in history are much more foreign.

Sunflower leaves and seeds. Dancers, musicians, yoga teachers, theater groups, martial artists, and many others will gather at CoCo for the event.

“I think I came here with my mother, so we started training first,” said local skater Paolo Randall.

Large Plantations for the Birds

In the end, they finished planting lettuce, parsley, onions, and cabbage, but after the party was over, the globe was lit in the garden and left in the hands of the residents.

Randall was one of the pioneers of horticulture and agriculture in this community.

As such, he decided to plant healthy native sunflower seeds in this garden.
