A singer who was going to perform a show is in danger in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) during a heavy storm expected to hit the state of São Paulo over the weekend, with wind gusts of up to 100 km/h.

A samba artist was scheduled to perform in the city center at an event organized by the city hall.

The artist was one of the attractions of the Black Art Festival, which was to be held on November 18, 19, and 20.

The event was planned to close out the festivities.

The city hall of São Bernardo do Campo announced in a press release that it is considering a new date for the event.

“The postponement is to ensure everyone’s safety.

The city is committed to holding the event on another day to celebrate Black Consciousness Month,” the statement says.

The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo issued a meteorological risk alert this Wednesday (15).

The forecasts are valid from Friday (17) to next Sunday (19).

During this period, thunderstorms with gusts of 60 km/h to 100 km/h are expected, followed by hail and strong wind gusts in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo.

After recording a heat index of 58.5°C in the morning, the city of Rio de Janeiro entered an evacuation zone for heavy rains and hail on Tuesday night (14).

Operations

According to the Rio Operations Center, the west zone of the capital and the Baixada Fluminense were the areas most affected by the storm.

The operational level is the second on a scale of five, meaning there is a risk of high-impact events in the city.

There is a possibility of another level change due to rain and/or other factors.

Rio registered a heat index of 58.5°C, the highest since the Alerta Rio System began measurements in 2014.

The measurement was taken at 9:15 AM at the Guaratiba station, in the city’s west zone.

Intense Heat for the Show

Meanwhile, in the northern part of the capital, thermometers registered 42.5°C.

The city has been under the influence of a heatwave that has affected a large part of Brazil since the end of last week.

According to Alerta Rio, the heat index is a calculation of meteorological variables measured to gauge the overall temperature felt by the human body.

In tropical regions like Rio de Janeiro, the heat index considers air temperature and relative humidity in its calculations.

When relative humidity is high, the amount of sweat produced by the body decreases, resulting in greater heat retention than would occur in dry air, for example.

Wednesday (26) is expected to be marked by thunderstorms with lightning in several Brazilian states, said Climatempo.

The hot and humid air that has accumulated and spread across the country is causing the formation of heavy clouds that are likely to bring rain to many regions.

The National Meteorological Institute (INMET) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock issued a yellow alert for storms and heavy rains for all regions of Brazil.

The forecast predicts daily rainfall of up to 50 mm, winds of up to 60 km/h, and a risk of hail.

Several cities in Rio Grande do Sul were hit by strong storms, which caused numerous lightning strikes and huge hailstones in the state on Tuesday night (3), said Metsul.

Conclusion

Metsul reported that the strongest storms in the west, northwest, central, and northern parts of Rio Grande do Sul had more than 30 millimeters of rain in a short period.

The United States’ National Weather Service classification states that hail larger than 7 centimeters can be considered giant.

According to Metsul, this was the case with the ice that fell in some cities in Rio Grande do Sul on Tuesday.

Barros Cassal, one of the municipalities most affected by the hail, will suspend classes today (4) and will have a Civil Defense team to assess the situation in the city.

The municipal council said it believes that more than 200 families were affected.

“We have never seen hail of this size and volume,” said the local civil defense coordinator.

Heavy rain fell on Wednesday afternoon, putting the entire city on alert for flash floods.

Following record high temperatures, the city of São Paulo registered heavy rain and hail in seven locations on Wednesday afternoon (27), according to the city hall’s Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE).

According to Climatempo, the temperature dropped to about 14°C.

According to the institute, at 2 PM, São Paulo registered 36°C, and after the rain, it dropped to 22°C at 5 PM, between 3:20 PM and 4:20 PM.
